Do It Yourself HVAC

“Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems.” — Scott Adams

Also known as HVAC for fun and profit (pro-tip: nopes). The only profit comes in the form of having usable heat for the winter, which is rather important when you live in the wilderness of northern Idaho. A side bonus is having cooling, which is helpful in the summer on the days it hits 100F+.

This was probably one of the toughest projects I’ve ever done in my life. I never planned on becoming an HVAC [hydronics] engineer, but as you will read it was borne out of necessity. The world of HVAC intersects many different disciplines and I have deep respect for those that do it well. It’s also a very sad state of affairs and an industry that is ripe for disruption and simplification. It’s too late for me, but maybe papa Elon will eventually see it done.

Pics or it didn’t happen

These are just a few of the highlights along the journey… more in the details below!

Disclaimer

The material I cover in the following sections is not for the average DIYer, and spans disciplines including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and the downright crazy. I do not claim to be a professional in any of these things except maybe the crazy, and real harm could come to you, your loved ones, and property if you were to attempt to reproduce. I strongly encourage you to hire a professional for anything remotely similar. There will be some pictures with company logos and links to company websites that may indirectly encourage you to buy something, but I have zero affiliation with any of them and was in no way paid to promote them (although it would have been nice). This is nothing but raw “hey I researched this and this is what I’m using” information. Reader and buyer beware, I’m not responsible for any damages, you have been sufficiently warned, blah blah yadda yadda.
